The questions people ask before they trust something with this.
The law may be complicated. Your ability to participate in it shouldn't be. Plain answers, in the order the objections tend to arrive, and where a question turns on law or jurisdiction, the answer says so.
Questions and answers
Personal Law
Personal Law is the technology, knowledge, tools, professional access, records, and intelligence an individual uses to understand and manage the law as it affects their life. It gives individuals an ongoing ability to understand, organize, and manage legal matters directly, with professional judgment available when the person decides it matters.
Briefcase is a Personal Law platform, a private, intelligent legal foundation for every person, family, founder, and business. It makes the documents, obligations, decisions, and rights governing your life understandable, answerable, coordinated, and ready for action, and it keeps you in control of every legal decision.
Three commitments: understand what is happening, remain in control, and always have a path forward. Understanding, agency, and forward motion.
General-purpose AI was built to answer anything. Briefcase was built for the law as it affects your life: your record, your rights, your next step, and a professional when you choose. Ask a chatbot and you get an answer. Ask Briefcase and you get a legal foundation.
The agreements and decisions that govern a life are already operating. Briefcase makes them understandable, keeps changes and deadlines visible, and keeps you ready before those terms become urgent.
A document that is outdated, contradictory, or unavailable at the moment of need cannot do its job. Briefcase keeps the plan connected to the people, decisions, dates, and access that make it usable.
Trust and privacy
Briefcase is confidential by design. Every answer starts with your question in the context of your matter, then works out how the statutes, regulations, and case law apply in your circumstances. Every citation is researched and checked before it reaches you. Human judgment is there when you decide it matters.
No. Your documents, notes, and AI conversations are never used to train or fine-tune any model, ours or a provider's. Briefcase does not sell legal data or use it for advertising. Matter content routes only to zero-data-retention models whose providers retain no prompts or completions to train on or disclose.
It says so. When the system has no grounded answer it returns a follow-up-needed fallback in place of unsupported material presented as grounded. A confident, wrong, uncited answer is a real harm to someone navigating a process, so grounded and cited is both a quality and a safety property.
Briefcase tells you when a request reads as a request for legal advice, then explains the grounded options, why they were surfaced, and their tradeoffs, and the decision stays yours. Individualized advice comes from a professional authorized in your jurisdiction, within an engagement you choose.
Briefcase preserves confidentiality and supports any protection the law and circumstances allow. It never tells you that using AI automatically creates attorney-client privilege or work-product protection. Whether a protection applies is always fact- and jurisdiction-specific, and Briefcase preserves the strongest available facts for asserting it.
What Briefcase never kept, it cannot hand over. Your conversations with Briefcase leave no transcript: not a copy, not a summary, not a topic. Briefcase keeps that a conversation happened, when, with which model, and what it cost, and an answer joins your Matter only when you save it. What Briefcase can disclose is bounded by what it retains and can read. It requires valid legal process and discloses only what the process compels.
Briefcase is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Briefcase provides legal information, organization, and tools. Legal advice comes from a licensed attorney in an attorney-client relationship.
Professionals
No. Briefcase provides grounded information, circumstance-specific option analysis, contextual education, and drafting help. It does not provide legal advice or represent anyone. Individualized legal advice comes from a professional authorized in your jurisdiction, within an engagement you choose. Briefcase does not stop and hand the question to a lawyer, and it never pretends to be one.
An informed, organized client makes the engagement more efficient. Briefcase prepares the client to participate. Counsel's professional judgment stays with counsel.
Briefcase charges a flat technology fee and never takes a percentage of legal fees. The structure is built to mitigate fee-sharing risk under jurisdiction-specific rules. The limited-scope catalog and anonymized representation-opportunity flow are separate, and the professional chooses every engagement.
Briefcase earns from technology, never a share of the legal fee. Software handles preparation. The person buys professional judgment for the scope they choose. The professional's fee belongs to the professional.
Business
The work is grounded in the business's authorized documents and governing authority, connected to accountable people and workflows, and brings professional review into the same context when the business chooses it.
The law firm supplies professional judgment. The company still needs to own, understand, operate, and preserve its legal foundation between engagements and across professional relationships.
Ownership, IP, employment, and contract gaps become more expensive when diligence or conflict supplies the deadline. The company needs its legal spine while it is being built, not only when an investor, employee, customer, or acquirer exposes a missing clause or record.
Drive stores files; counsel supplies judgment. Briefcase makes the record answerable, current, and ready between professional engagements.
The lack of in-house counsel is precisely why routine legal work otherwise falls to the owner. Briefcase creates value before a lawsuit: contracts, obligations, renewals, records, and diligence.
Yes. Leadership, finance, people, security, operations, sales, and outside professionals can work from one authorized context without gaining access to everything else. Answers come from the material each person is permitted to see, with the source cited.
Yes. Existing counsel and vetted professionals enter the scope the business chooses and start from a prepared Matter. The business keeps the record, across every professional relationship.
No. Start with the next live contract, obligation, or dispute and expand from demonstrated value.
Begin with one transaction or recurring obligation whose value is visible across participants, and expand from demonstrated value.

Where a state has affirmatively authorized a role or a service, Briefcase offers it, and where it has not, Briefcase withholds it. The per-state permitted set is maintained through jurisdiction-specific legal review.
